In most cases No. If you just carry a pitching wedge and a sand wedge, you will have a big gap in terms of loft and distance. Let’s say your pitching wedge is 46º and your sand wedge is 58º. That is a 12º difference. At about 3 yards per degree of loft, you end up with a 36 yard distance gap. Ideally you should have no more than a 5º difference in lofts. If you don’t have the right lofts, you will end up over swinging on some and taking partial shots at other greens. That is not a very good situation. Ideally, you should be taking full shots with your wedges at the greens. Solution: Carry a third wedge to bridge the gap between your Pitching Wedge and Sand Wedge. It’s quite often called the Gap Wedge or A Wedge.

Buddy system for junior golfers in the Dallas area Would you like your son or daughter to practice golf together with other kids rather than with their father? I have this problem – I like to take my son to practice and I enjoy it but I think my son would enjoy practice more if there were other kids around. There are junior leagues in the Dallas area but they are more formal. They have membership dues and tournaments etc. I don’t want any of that. I just want my son to practice and play golf with other kids – no dues – no subscriptions – no tournaments. Just kids practicing together and having fun playing golf. If you like the idea, please enter your comments below. I will then contact you. Let’s get together and make golf more enjoyable for our kids. Najee

The big Pooh-bahs of golf thought the modern day golfers are just bomb and gouge players and they needed to be reigned in. Maybe they were making the old timers look not so good. So they decided to change the rules on how deep the grooves of a wedge can be. Let’s see how these guys make par when they miss the green. Let’s see them squirm when their wedge shots fly over the green. So all professional golfers were made to switch to the new groove conforming wedges in 2010. The result: In 2009, 57.5% of the time Pro’s who missed the green made Par or better. In 2010, 57.4%. So much for all that. The winners – wedge manufacturers. Those amateurs who wanted to comply with the new USGA rule dumped their old wedges for the new ones. Those who couldn’t care less for USGA rules hoarded up on the non-complying wedges as manufacturers weren’t allowed to make them after December 31, 2010. For the average weekend golfer, if you are happy with your wedges, don’t buy new ones unless you have worn out your grooves. The USGA doesn’t mind if you play with the new or old grooves for another 10 years – most of you don’t care anyway. If you really want to improve your short game, what can really help you is better technique. Get your hands on a copy of Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible and practice what he preaches. I love golf and love the surroundings that golf is played in. You are surrounded by tall trees, well manicured greens, ponds, streams, exotic birds and flowers. These are all the things that you would expect women to enjoy. Don’t they? Yet not many women play golf? Why is that? Physical size and strength is neutralized in golf by the position of the starting tees. The rest is all a measure of skill and women that do play are just as good or as bad as men. I am talking about amateur / recreational / weekend golfers. I am very active on Twitter @interlopergolf and a lot of ladies say they don’t play golf but they enjoy watching it. This prompted me to ask this question of all, men and women, why do you think not many ladies play golf? Please post your comments below about why women don’t play golf and what can be done to bring more women into the beautiful world of golf. Maybe we can get some insights. Najee
