Most people when starting out, go to a golf store or department store and buy a set of golf clubs. Such sets usually have a pitching wedge and that’s it. Later on, people add a sand wedge and that’s about it. Over the years as their game improves, they start understanding the value of the short game. Some of them read a good book like Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible and really start appreciating the value of the short game. After all, 63% of golf shots are within 100 yards of the green and that is where you need wedges. An ideal golf set would have four wedges, a pitching wedge, a gap wedge, sand wedge and a lob wedge. Dave Pelz is a strong proponent of the 4×3 method. Under the 4 x 3 method, you use a set of four wedges at three different power levels, 7:30, 9:00. and 10:30 to give you three precise shots, thus 4 x 3 = 12 shots. You write these shots on a tape and stick it to each club. Next time you are within 100 yards, you check your yardage and see which club and which shot gives you the best chance of getting close to the pin. The next thing is to figure out which golf wedges to buy. You would like to read a review of golf wedges and compare one set of wedges to another but there aren’t that many golf wedges reviews. So we decided to do [Read More ...]
Golfers change their driver more often than any other club in their bag. Every year, manufacturers come up with newer and better models and golfers want to know which one is the best driver of them all. However; the best golf driver for one may not be the best golf driver for another person. We all have different swings and different strengths and weaknesses. That makes golf reviews that much more difficult. The best golf drivers for women are different than the best golf drivers for seniors. Most men want to know which one is the longest driver and do the lighter heads or the lighter shafts help them get faster clubhead speed. High handicappers want to know which ones are the most forgiving drivers and total newbies are looking for discount golf drivers. Now golf magazines do a very good job of comparing big brands but the best values are in the minor brands. Why pay $300 for Callaway golf drivers or Titleist or Cleveland when an Acer Leggera can be just as good for 1/3rd the price. Magazines don’t cover minor brands. We at InterloperGolf focus on minor brands but didn’t have comparative driver reviews to help our customers make better decisions. So we decided to do it ourselves. We based our review and comparison of golf drivers on how well they perform in various situations but shot dispersion and the ability to shape shots was the most important part. Most par 4′s and 5′s start with a [Read More ...]

Recent wins by Adam Scott and Web Simpson on the PGA tour and continuous wins and high finishes by Bernhard Langer on the Senior tour are making more and more people notice long putters. Long Putters have been around for a while but when a unique club type gets some victories under its belt, regular weekend golfers also take notice. More and more people are now buying long putters also called broomstick putters or neck putters. What are the advantages of long putters? Less moving body parts – one arm instead of two. Long putters restrict wrist hinge by anchoring the putter to a fixed point — your sternum. . Increased wrist action leads to a loss of control of the putterhead just before impact. Result – a true pendulum stroke. Eliminates twitching at impact. The pendulum like stroke of long putters is smoother and more consistent than the stroke required for a regular length putter. Deadly accurate on short putts. Long putters are also easier on the back than a regular length putter as golfers take a more upright stance. Disadvantages of long putters? Distance control on lag putting. Takes a while getting used to. Strong winds cause stability issues. The golfer is standing more upright, the putter is long – the wind has a greater surface area to buffet against. People take notice so if you are the shy type and don’t want to talk to anyone, you may have a problem. Conversely, it’s a good conversation starter. [Read More ...]

The Acer XF Leggera The longest driver of them all Material: Face: 6-4 Titanium Body: 100% Titanium Finish: White crown and Charcoal Metallic sides Manufacturers can’t just magically remove weight from a massive 460cc titanium driver without some consequences. It’s tricky business. Using very precise manufacturing technologies, weight was removed only from the crown area so as not to affect the strength of the overall clubhead. Available in lofts of 9.5º, 10.5º and 12º. If you don’t want to have the longer length, you can ask for length to be customized to 45″. If you don’t want to have the lighter clubhead, you can go with the standard Acer XF driver – that is also available in a draw version. Comes fitted with the high end Winn DSI AVS 17 soft comfortable grip with all weather playability. We hesitate in having a driver longer than 45″ as that means a slightly heavier driver and also potential loss of control. 45″ works just fine and that’s the recommended length by most golf manufacturers. You can also go with a very lightweight shaft but if you use a regular clubhead, it feels unwieldy. When the Acer XF Leggera clubhead was introduced, it was intriguing. Most driver clubheads weigh 200 grams. The Leggera clubhead is 190 grams. That opens up a couple of options. You can have a lighter 45″ driver and that will give you greater clubhead speed but it will feel different – feel matters. Or you can add an inch [Read More ...]

When hybrid golf clubs started getting popular, many golfers added the 3 or 4 hybrids to their bags, generally replacing the irons they were finding hard to hit. Made sense. As people started getting more comfortable with hybrid golf clubs, they wanted to have the same or similar clubs in midrange sizes. Golf manufacturers complied and started stretching the top and bottom of the range. Today, you can get a hybrid golf club from # 1 to # 9 and even wedges come in hybrids. It seems odd but it isn’t really. As a golfer, you like to play with clubs that make you feel comfortable and that help you get consistent results. If hybrid clubs make you feel more comfortable, then why not have a set of hybrids. The general assumption is that most people struggle with long irons. However; at InterloperGolf, we see a good many orders for hybrid clubs in the shorter scoring clubs. Many people are ordering # 7, 8 and 9 in hybrid clubs. Initially we were a bit surprised but not everyone is good with short irons – we just assumed they were. Now that people see options available to them, they want to have hybrids there also. Looking at the demand for hybrids, we started tinkering with different make up of sets of hybrid golf clubs. We started with a set of 3 hybrid clubs, generally # 3, 4 and 5. It did decent business but our real success came with the set of [Read More ...]
